OK, yes, it's a tragedy; it's horrific. In a fair world, it wouldn't happen. But I live in Chicago, where 20 children have died of gunfire this school year. And where shootings have risen dramatically this month.
Murder in Gaza? Worthy of the front page of the nation's leading daily newspaper. Murder in the U.S.? Something that happens to poor people and a problem that we're beyond trying to solve.
Gentrification, gated communities, policing...all have made safe spaces in our cities. I live in one...the north side of Chicago. But there's an entire half of the city that is not safe, where hundreds of people are shot each year. Where families are breaking apart. Where blood and flesh and bone shatter with a regularity that is simply sinful.
Are we ever going to stop taking and start giving? Are we ever going to stop thinking government is evil (except when it serves our own needs)? Are we ever going to stop blaming people for their situation? Are we ever going to walk in the shoes of another within our own borders?
Jesus Christ, what has this country come to?
